Marina McCowinI joined the Rouse Lab as an undergraduate in 2015. As a current graduate student, I study the extraordinary invertebrates that live in deep-sea chemosynthetic environments. I love all things related to the deep sea, but my favorite group to study is Vestimentifera, which includes some fascinating tube worms found at deep-sea chemosynthetic habitats like hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, and whale falls.
My interest in deep-sea biology is matched by my passion for teaching and outreach. I love developing engaging hands-on activities for public education, creating innovative lectures, and talking about deep-sea science and conservation to all audiences.

Research
My research focuses on utilizing molecular tools to understand the evolution, biodiversity, and biogeography of deep-sea chemosynthetic invertebrates in the Pacific Ocean, including annelids, echinoderms, and mollusks. I am interested in using molecular methods (primarily phylogenetics and population genetics) to understand how deep-sea chemosynthetic communities are connected over great geographical spans and depths, as well as how we can conserve essential biodiversity in these important habitats.
